Smells: Dusty; spicy; a layered smell. Thick; balanced with a slight blackberry underlay. Dry; musty; woodsy/pine kick.
Tastes: Dry; thick - sticks to the palate playfully. Slight berry sweetness with a frothy, dusty immediate impact. Balanced, thick.
Overall? I defintely recommend this Zinfandel … especially if you are new to the complex world of wine.
I’ve never been interested in wine until recently. I was always a “Rot-gut” whiskey girl, drank for the kick in the balls and the drunk after-effect. I chugged down wine just to feel the effect, not appreciating how intimite wine can be if tasted the right way. If you are just now beginning to enter this world, let me say this: wine can have the power to change your life if you can appreciate it for what it is. Grapes are among the most complex of fruits … enzymes that can be manipulated to the tastes of the person who tends them. We often use descriptive words like “strawberry, or WOOD, or even a cocoa taste” … but obviously that is not what is tasted. It’s not in the wine, it’s merely a descriptor. What you are tasting is the individual care of the person tilling in the vineyard. What kind of wood and how it aged to barrel the wine? What time of the season are the grapes picked/planted. How they are cared for once plunked. All these concepts are the reason you will see someone swirl their glass under one’s nose before inhaling the liquid. Wine has the power to give you the experience of the one who cared for it in the process of transformation.
I, myself, am more acclimated towards the red wines. Zinfandels, Pinot Noir, etc. You have to develope your palate. When looking at how someone rates a wine, keep in mind their palate may be different from yours. Know the taster and know yourself.
About my palate: I prefer a thick, dusty wine. Frothy, a taste that teases my tastebuds. I pick up more woodsy smells and I take pleasure in them. If you are looking for a more fruity sweet wine, a California blend of Pinot Noir or a blush might be more your style. I will update a new wine as I try them and hopefully will help you make your journey, as well.
